CANINE BLOOD TYPES

Like humans, dogs have several blood types, designated as “Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA)” and a number, for example “DEA 1.1 Positive” or “DEA 1.1 Negative.”  Matching for the DEA 1.1 blood type (either positive or negative) is most important for preventing transfusion reactions (much like A-B-O blood grouping in humans).

DEA 1.1 Negative dogs can only receive DEA 1.1 Negative blood, but they can donate blood to dogs that are either DEA 1.1 Positive or Negative.

DEA 1.1 Positive dogs can receive blood from both DEA 1.1 Positive & Negative dogs, but can only donate blood to DEA 1.1 Positive dogs.

There are other canine blood types as well.  Though they generally do not cause severe hemolytic transfusion reactions, Sun States recommends, at a minimum, that the appropriate DEA 1.1 blood type be used and that a cross-match is performed prior to transfusing any blood, regardless of the type information available.

Sun States types all blood and blood components for DEA 1.1 Positive or Negative.  For non-emergent transfusion needs, more extensive blood typing and cross-matching is available.  Please contact us for details.

BLOOD COMPONENT PRODUCTS

In most instances, whole blood is not needed for transfusion therapy and blood component therapy should be considered instead.  Blood component therapy offers several important advantages over whole blood transfusion:

bulletAny given patient only receives the blood components they need
bulletA single donor can help multiple patients (up to 4)
bulletStable components (such as plasma) can be separated from unstable components (such as blood cells), extending the shelf life of stable components
bulletSpecial processing can help preserve unstable blood components (such as Factor VIII) to extend their shelf life beyond that if they are kept in whole blood
bulletExtended shelf life reduces waste and reduces the cost of transfusion therapy
bulletBecause the cost of collection and storage can be distributed among several recipients, blood components help reduce the cost of transfusion therapy
